Abstract
Introduction The marketing of homeopathic medicines whose effectiveness is disputed deserves consideration in countries struggling to cover essential health needs. Their presence in a segment of the pharmaceutical sector in Senegal is assessed in this study.
Materiels and methods : A survey form was completed during interviews with pharmacy staff from four localities in the suburbs of Dakar and the data was subjected to a descriptive and comparative analysis.
Results and discussion : Out of 100 establishments contacted collaboration was obtained from 20 in Guédiawaye (GDW), 15 in Hann Bel Air (HBA), 17 in Parcelles Assainies(PA) and 20 in Pikine (PKN). Although no preparation activity was noted, homeopathic specialties, 81.42% of which came from local suppliers, were available in 70% of pharmacies in Guédiawaye; 66.67% of Hann Bel Air; 35.29% of Parcelles Assainies and 40% of Pikine.
Considering the form, the dosage and the packaging, 46 solid forms, 32 liquid forms and 12 semisolid forms were identified; yhus classified in decreasing frequency: tablets (73.9%), syrups (65.6%), creams (58.3%), ointments (41.7%) and granules (23.9%) . These products represent a tiny part at less than 1% of turnover for 92.1% of pharmacies, between 1 and 5% for the others.
Conclusion: Although low in volume and value, the presence of homeopathic medicines is observed in the majority of establishments that have collaborated. The consistency of their marketing is questionable in the absence of specialized practitioners and appropriate controls
