Abstract

Introduction: Sterilization of medical devices (MD) in hospitals is essential in the prevention of healthcare-associated infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sterilization activity in the Centre hospitalier universitaire pédiatrique Charles de Gaulle (CHUP-CDG) in Burkina Faso

Materials and Methods : This was a descriptive, cross-sectional, prospective study conducted in five care units of the CHUP-CDG. Data were collected by interviews and direct observations of practices. They were analyzed in accordance with the French hospital pharmacy good practice guidelines.

Results: Many shortcomings were noted. At the organizational level, they were mainly concerned the absence of pharmaceutical monitoring of the sterilization activity of the MD, its dispersion in the care units, the insufficiency of training and means of protection of the personnel, the architectural and organizational inadequacy of the premises, the absence or inadequacy of certain materials and specific products, the absence of a quality assurance system. At the level of the practice of the activity, the insufficiencies were mainly the non-respect of the measures of hygiene and individual protection, of the concentrations of the products and the soaking times. In addition, the use of dry heat sterilization, the lack of control and traceability of the process were observed.

Conclusion: The sterilization activity of the medical devices at the CHUP-CDG presents numerous insufficiencies which imperatively require the implementation of corrective measures.
