Acne is the leading cause of consultation for facial skin disorders. The use of salicylic acid (SA) in the therapeutic arsenal is limited due to numerous side effects. The aim of this project was to develop formulations based on SA and pectin from the Amélie variety of Mangifera indica L. (Anacardiaceae), which would reduce the adverse effects encountered with conventional forms and guarantee safe use for patients. After extraction and characterization of mango pectin, several gel formulations with natural and commercially modified pectin were carried out. The gels were characterized macroscopically, physicochemically, rheologically and texturally. Extraction yield was 24%. Mango pectin was weakly methoxylated, with an esterification degree of 27%. Galacturonic acid content was 94% and moisture content 7%. Stable gels were obtained with 2% pectin + 0.2% calcium chloride in pH 5 citrate buffer. The addition of salicylic acid caused the gels to break, reducing their viscosity. Pectin gels were rheofluidizing. The natural pectin gels showed lower dynamic viscosity and work of adhesion values than gels with commercial pectin, as well as different organoleptic characters. However, salicylic acid was dispersed in the matrix.
